The challenges are now closed for submissions. Thank you all for your contributions! Now, the work starts for our colleagues from the institutes, who have to examine and judge your submissions. But they already told me from their first impressions, that they are astonished by the high quality. The challenge continues to be exciting :-)

Yes, you’re right! It was a great challenge - because of you, the participants! Thank you for taking part and taking interest in our research topics! We will now sight your contributions, and after a careful evaluation, we will declare the winners. Philipp will shortly provide you with more information, so stay tuned!

Thanks for the challenge, it was fun.
Deadline for Optimization and Photonics Challenge extended!

As the deadline for the FAU Open Research Challenge is coming ever closer, we have received some requests for more time. Especially from late-joining teams.

We are happy to announce that we are able two give you two additional weeks for the Discrete Optimization and Photonic Technologies/Holography challenge. The new deadline for these two challenges now is August 9th, 12 pm CEST.

For the Digital Forensis Challenge, we need to stick to the original schedule for organizational reasons. We are sorry that we cannot extend the deadline here, it remains July 26th, 12 pm CEST.

Good luck to all of you on the last mile of the challenges!

Hi, great that you joined the challenges! It might help if you add some information on your status with the challenge (i.e. how much you have solved, what your expertise is and where you would need the help of the other team members), so that your potential colleagues know how to join forces best!

Oh, I just recognized: Did you see the post by Naveen Kaveti some days ago - he is looking for partners for the discrete optimization challenge as well! Maybe you can team up?

Hi Shawkat Ali. I like to team up with you. I will mail you the details of work that I have done so far asap. Kindly let me know if your interested. Here is my mail id: kaveti.naveenkumar@gmail.com

    The submission system is open!

Some of you may already have noticed: the submission for our three challenges is now online, we are looking forward to your contributions! You will find all necessary (technical) information in the respective sections of the three challenges.

Solutions can be submitted by teams only (see our rules). So if you have started to work on the challenges alone, use your chance to team up with other young researchers from all over the world. Either look for other team members among your friends and colleagues, or look for others to join you with a post in our Forum.

We are excited to see what you have come up with. Good luck to all of you!

Three weeks to go for the FAU Open Research Challenge!

The summer is getting hot here in Germany as proven through the look of my office window (although it is probably nothing compared to what other countries have to endure), and also our Open Research Challenge is reaching its hot phase. There are three weeks left until the submission deadline.

If you have started thinking about the challenges but did not go the last step to form a team and write up a final solution, it is your chance now to enter the competition: there are some people out there, still looking for team members. Have a look at the discussion threads here and in the individual challenges. We are looking forward to your contributions!

Thanks Philipp. I will contact him.

Still looking for a team member

Hi all, anyone out there interested in joining a team for the discrete optimization challenge? Programming skills would be important, I can cover the mathematics.
Looking forward to hearing from you! L

Hi! Are you already working on the challenge on yourself? Any potential team members on the horizon?
    Prerit 2 years ago
Hi Phillipp. No I haven’t started working on it yet. If you wish we can form a group
    Philipp 2 years ago
I am sorry, I am working in the organizing team and cannot participate myself. Besides that, I would be of no help - I am no expert in the field. I justed wanted to check in how things are going. We will continue our communication efforts. I am sure we will get some more people to join - all potential team members for you :-)
    Prerit 2 years ago
Oh! Thank you. I sure I hope I do find someone before its too late.

    Checker or Solution Sample

Is it possible to release a checker or a sample solution to illustrate the computation of the cost for Discrete Optimization Challenge ?

Currently we are not planning to post additional hints. But we are encouraging all participants to join up in teams and and discuss and work together on the challenges (actually, team formation is even part of the formal rules). This would also be the space to discuss your approaches. However, the subject experts from the institute might weigh in some time later with some additional comments.

    Hi Deepak,

this is an important question! We plan to provide one or several sample solutions by next week. We hope this will clarify the calculation of the objective function. If not, you are welcome to ask us again. Furthermore, we will give information on the solution file format for submission.
    Something else please,

Will the solutions be published later? If yes, where?

    Thanks again!

We do not have sample solutions for the instances, as the problem is quite hard to solve for us, too. However, it is very interesting for us to compare your solution approaches with our own ones, such that we are looking forward to joint´discussions!
    Philipp 2 years ago
Hi Guillaume, as the colleagues from the chair of economics have written, we do not have complete sample solutions. But of course we will publish something about the results and possible approaches afterwards. With permission of the respective teams, we might also include some examples from submitted solutions.
